Somewhere the substances enter the country

A police officer believes that a significant increase in seized drugs at Keflavik Airport can be attributed to close cooperation between the Customs and the police in the Suðurnes region. However, there is probably also an increased import.

Mbl.is reported this morning that it will be in record years in the amount of cocaine, cannabis and oxycontins, which is confiscated at Keflavik Airport.

So far this year, the South Sudanese police have seized 40.26 kilos of cocaine, 109,648 kilos of cannabis and over 20,000 tablets of oxycontini and its imitations at the airport. All of these figures be launched in last year’s total figures or have already topped them.

Hard to say what goes through

Jón Halldór Sigurðsson is investigating organized crime at the South Sudanese police but asked what caused this great increase he says:

« I think it is first and foremost that we are getting more, but it’s definitely more imports too. It’s hard to say what’s going through and what is not. »

However, he says it is obvious that there is a lot more amount of drugs to enter the country. It is clear that despite these great performance of the South Sudanese police when it comes to seizing drugs at Keflavik Airport, street prices have little to nothing changed.

« Maybe that’s the measure of what we are doing a lot here, » says Jón Halldór.

Most carriers traveling with the substances are mostly half to one kilogram. Here you can see packages around cocaine fluid that the police seized earlier this year.

Effective cooperation with Customs

He also says that the increase in cases at Keflavik Airport can probably be attributed to close cooperation between the police with the customs office on the field.

« Customs and the South Sudanese police have worked very closely in this work to stop this on the border and I would say that this was just the result of that cooperation. Customs have become very capable and clear in suggesting people who are likely, » says Jón Halldór.

Asked if there has been any change in the nature of the case in recent years, he says so.

Most foreign nationals

« This is really very similar. The beasts that have the substances internally may be most to import something between half a kilo to a kilo, » says Jón Halldór, adding:

« So we have been getting like thirteen kilos of cocaine in one bag and 19 kilos of cannabis in one bag but it is very special. Usually this is distributed more and in smaller packs. Usually, these are about 3-4 kilos in each bag. »

He also says that the vast majority of carriers coming to Iceland are foreign nationals.

« It is an event if there is an Icelander somewhere in this, there is one, two issues a year but the rest are foreigners, » says Jón Halldór.
