The Board of the Social Democratic Party (SDE) at the meeting late in the evening on Tuesday, decided to support the amendment to the Constitution, which deprives the citizens of Russia and Belarus of the right to vote in local elections, but in these elections would leave the right to vote to stateless persons, writes BNS.

“Social democrats still support the amendment to the Constitution, which deprives the rights of the voting of Russian citizens and Belarus, but leaves it for stateless persons. It is unreasonable to equally consider citizens of aggressors and stateless persons, whose only homeland is Estonia. There were legal and actual arguments against this approach from the very beginning, ”repeated the leader of the party Lauri Laurinemets.

The chairman of the Social Democrats explained that the parliamentary faction will not support the options for amendments proposed at the last moment, but will vote for the option of changing the constitution, in which stateless persons will retain the right to vote in local elections at least in these elections.

“In the current geopolitical situation, it is justified so that the citizens of Russia and Belarus could not vote already in the autumn local elections, and this requires a change in the constitution urgently,” Laenamette said.

At the same time, according to the assessment of the Social Democrats, the change in the Constitution will not eliminate the long-term flaws of the Estonian integration policy, so they expect specific steps from the new government to expand the possibilities to study the Estonian language and comprehensive support for people when talking about Estonian citizenship.

“Polls confirm the high interest of stateless persons in Estonian citizenship, so we must continue efforts to integrate them and citizens of third countries into the Estonian society,” Lesemette emphasized.
