Social Solidarity as a cause of Marques Mendes

Luís Marques Mendes said on Tuesday that social solidarity will be one of the central causes of his campaign. The presidential candidate also announced that he will promote a cycle of twelve debates.

Marques Mendes, on the sidelines of a visit to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santarém, said that the President of the Republic « does not rule, but must have causes », considering social solidarity as « one of the most important. »

According to the Lusa agency, the candidate for president of the Republic argued that the head of state can play a role of sensitization and « pressure, in a good way », so that support to institutions « do not stay in the drawer ».

« We can press, in the best sense of the word, governments and namely central services, so that the component of support to institutions is not in the drawer. Support to the social sector is a step towards a fairer society, » said the former PSD leader when asked about the problems of financing and scarcity of human resources faced by many of these entities.

Marques Mendes announced that it will promote, from next week, a cycle of twelve debates on national causes, including social action, with the participation of supporters and not supporters of their candidacy.

« I want to be president of all the Portuguese. And I want the best of society to help think these causes, » he said.
