So much gets pope leo xiv in pay
When imagining one of the world’s most powerful men, it is obvious to think of luxury cars, milliongage and exclusive housing addresses.
But for the pope – the newly elected Leo XIV – the reality looks different. Not because he lacks access to resources, but because the position of pope does not come with a regular salary.
On the other hand, something else comes with: Absolutely everything paid.
It writes Newsner.
Pope Leo XIV becomes the first American in the role, and the interest in his life and habits has been massive since the appointment. Especially one question has taken up many: What does the pope really earn?
The answer is simple – and at the same time quite unusual. He does not get a classic salary.
The Vatican City makes sure he lacks anything: Housing, food, safety, transport and health care are covered from a central team.
Technically, he receives about 2,500 euros a month – equivalent to about DKK 18,600 – but it is rather a symbolic amount than an actual salary. The role is not about financial gain, but about service.
The predecessor Pope Frans was known for his modest style and his insistence on a single life, even if he was surrounded by pomp and splendor. An example that went around the world was when he received a Lamborghini in 2017 and immediately put it auction. The profits went to charity.
During his time as a pope, he also actively chose to cut wages to senior clergy and create greater financial transparency in the Vatican. Something needed. Despite solid donations – especially from the US, Germany and Italy – the sacred chair is fighting a sustained operating deficit. By 2023, it sounded at $ 90 million.
