So much can Mette Frederiksen’s plan cost the general Dane

There were not many surprised mines when Mette Frederiksen recently announced that Denmark must screw up massively for the defense budget.

The prime minister did not hide that it will be a heavy financial deal – but exactly how heavy?

The question has now tried to answer that question, and the math is not exactly small money.

The predictions of the bourgeois-liberal think tank are based on the fact that in future Denmark will need five percent of GDP on defense and security-which the prime minister has joined through a proposal from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. It will almost double the current planned expense, which is 2.3 percent.

CEPOS’s calculations show that the 5 percent corresponds to an annual bill of as much as DKK 83 billion. And then the inevitable question arises: Who has to pay?

According to CEPOS’s chief economist Mia Amalie Holstein, it is unrealistic to find all the money through new taxes – especially if you mind blowing up your household budget.

« If you choose to finance the entire build -up to 5 percent via tax increases, it will have major consequences for the Danes’ private finances. For a working family with two children it will mean an extra tax bill of DKK 50,900 a year. BT
