‘Smart’ Lantern records those who pass with red
The first ‘smart’ lantern at Greece He began to record drivers violations that violate the red traffic light.
This is the first modern technology camera, out of a total of 388 cameras to be placed first on the streets of Athens until the summer from the Attica Region. The installation of about 1,000 cameras will be followed by the Ministries of Citizen Protection and Digital Governance.
‘Smart’ Lantern records those who pass with red
The first digital camera installed and operates pilot in Alimos, at the intersection of Poseidonos and Kalamaki Avenues (on the stream to Piraeus) and records the registration plates of all vehicles that violate the red traffic light, storing evidence for each infringement.
The camera is located in a « strategic point » and works closely with the traffic light. When the lantern becomes red and a vehicle … ignore it, the system is activated and records six consecutive images: two black and white photos of the vehicle license plate and a video capturing the entire infringement. This material shall be sent to the competent authorities to issue a fine.
The first evidence shows that Alimos’ « smart » lantern records dozens of violations daily. The traffic light was chosen with the suggestion of traffic, due to the increased frequency of violations at the point, which make it one of the most « dangerous » in Attica. At present, the operation is pilot, with violations being digitally recorded without the imposition of fines.
Expansion of the system
The installation of the « smart » lantern in Alimos is just the beginning. The Region of Attica promotes the installation of another 387 cameras in central locations of the Basin, with the aim of monitoring violations of traffic lights. The project, totaling € 18.8 million, is funded by the Recovery Fund.
The rest of the cameras will be placed, at the suggestion of the competent Traffic Attica services, in parts of the Basin where most serious accidents have been recorded in the past. Indicatively, surveillance devices will be located on the intersections of Syngrou, Vouliagmeni, Katechaki, Mesogeion, Kifissia, Piraeus, Vasilissis Amalia, University, Vasilissis Sofia, Alexandra, Paiania, Koropiou Poseidon, Thebes, Heroes Technical University, Acharnes, Dekelia, NATO and Democracy.
The breach of the Red Lighthouse is punishable by the coke with a fine of 700 euros and additional administrative penalties. To protect privacy, the cameras only photograph the back of the vehicle, while their details are stored for two years.
The installation of « smart » lantern is part of a wider road safety plan in Attica. Increasing urban traffic and the need to reduce traffic accidents make this technology an essential tool to improve road safety.
It is noted that the 388 cameras in the Attica Region are the first to be installed by the summer on road hubs indicated by the Traffic Police as dangerous. At the same time, the relevant platform for cameras is aimed at the summer.
This is the single information system that will send the calls straight to the mobile or port of the citizen offender, and will also facilitate the digital examination of the objections.
