Slovart and Ikar distance themselves from the prizes awarded by the Bibiana. The publisher is bothering the management

Slovak publishers will compete in the Czech Republic.

Ikar and Slovart publishers distance themselves from the awards from the competition The most beautiful books of Slovakia, which is awarded by the International House of Arts for Children Bibiana. The titles of both publishing houses have appeared among this year’s awarded, despite the fact that they have long ago joined the boycott of the event.

The most beautiful books of Slovakia were distributed by Bibiana this week. However, the Slovak publishing house decided to boycott the awards this year, to protest with the current leadership of Bibiana and the leadership of the Ministry of Culture. However, some books were entered by illustrators or printers.

« Surprisingly, we learned that four of our publications were awarded. We did not participate in the awards. However, we found that our publications were entered in the competition printers And one of them was entered by an illustrator in the competition, ”says Ikaru CEO Marek Néma.

Slovart also pointed out that the publication of 100 years of the Slovak National Theater 1920 – 2020, which won the Prize of the Union of Polygraphy in Slovakia to the printer for extraordinary printing processing, did not join the publishing house, but the printer itself.

On Tuesday, the SME daily published the information that the competition was boycotted by all major publishers, except Slovart and Ikar, assume that their books were awarded in the competition and publishers were not signed under the January statement of the boycott.

“The publishers who conceived this opinion were published before they could respond,” explains Lucia Čarná from Ikar. After hesitation, the competition decided to boycott the entire association of publishers and booksellers of the Slovak Republic (ZVKS), including both large publishing houses.

The ZVKS was originally supposed to be a partner of the competition. « Some of our members protested against this, voting has decided not to be a partner of the most beautiful books of Slovakia, » says Slovart Director and ZVKS chairman Juraj Heger.

They were heard with a boycott

Many book publishers announced a boycott of the competition at the end of January. It was stimulated by the BRAK publishing house, which won the most prizes, ej publishing and literary bastion last year. Added Artforum, Inaque, the Portuguese Institute, Monokl, Absynt, Association of Illustrators, Black Holes, Capital, KK Bagala, Bublina publishing house and other smaller publishing houses.

Big and small publishers discussed the topic in the Martinus bookstore at the annual debate debate. « After this discussion, the big publishers also agreed that the boycott of the competition would be the best option this year. Although at the beginning it was a certain hesitation given that the competition has a long tradition, the discussion eventually led to a clear conclusion, » says Ikar Lucia Čarná.

The boycott was justified by the unprofessional leadership of the international house of art for children Bibiana, a non -transparent choice of director Petra Flach, who did not prove the necessary experience or competence, and disagreement with the profiling of this institution.

They were enrolled by the printers

Among the award -winning books were three from Ikaru: The release of Marina Andrej SládkovičArcher Paul Coelho and a pictorial publication of the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth by Katarína Nádaská.

As Ikar agreed on the boycott of the competition with other publishers as part of the Association of Publishers and Booksellers, no books for the publishing house did not apply. These books were submitted by printers and illustrator separately, as it allows them the status.

« It is so unhappy that the publisher’s consent is not necessary, » says Čarná.

On the contrary, the director of Slovarta Juraj Heger thinks that it would be a mistake to miss the printer from the competition. « For the printer, the most beautiful book of Slovakia is a certain appreciation of work and no one has the right to ban them from applying for what they made, » he says.

According to Hegera, the book 100 years of the Slovak National Theater of the Slovak National Theater was a collaborator, the main publisher was the Slovak National Theater. The publishing house itself also says that they did not register any book themselves, and the printer that enrolled the book did not communicate with them.

« I do not have the same opinion as other colleagues, but I respect that the situation is currently extremely unhappy and non -standard and also requires non -standard solutions, » adds Heger.

Slovak publishing houses in the Czech competition

Instead of the Bibiana Slovart and Ikar competition, they submitted their books to the Czech equivalent of the competition – the most beautiful Czech books of the year. This was extraordinarily opened by the possibility of logging in Slovak books in the non -competitive section.

« With concern, especially in the last year, we have been monitoring the development in the field of culture in Slovakia and hereby expressing solidarity with those who draw attention to many problematic and non -standard steps committed by the management of the Slovak Ministry of Culture, » the Czech organizers wrote.

« We welcomed this initiative of Czech colleagues and we applied, » adds Čarná.
