Of the new cars that were registered this year in our country, 6 in 10 were an SUV. That is a new record. Smaller and medium -sized models are particularly popular. A combination of comfort, safety, lots of space and a robust and modern look makes them so popular.
The number of new cars that was registered in 2025 has fallen slightly compared to the same period last year. From 90,389 to 80,775 (first two months of 2025).
The popularity of SUVs continues.
“Since 2018, SUVs have been at the top of the annual list of new car registrations in Belgium. And at the beginning of the 2025 financial year, SUVs reached a new symbolic milestone: 60% market share (60.6%). Or 6 out of 10 new cars is one Sport Utility Vehicle«
In practice, it is mainly the medium -sized SUVs (34.9% market share after 2 months in 2025) and the small SUVs (16.3%) that are particularly popular with the Belgian motorist. Large SUVs a little less.
The most popular model remains the BMW X1, the electric SUV that is particularly good as a leasing car.
That SUVs have become so popular in recent years, that has several reasons, say car experts.
Comfort and space
They generally offer more space in the interior than traditional cars. This makes them attractive for families or for people who want more space, especially during long journeys. Or to transport things. That in combination with all the gadgets that are present, they have sent the monovolumes to the forget well.
Visibility and safety
“The raised riding position in an SUV offers a better view of the road, which can offer a sense of safety and control. This appeals to many people who prefer this panoramic view. Moreover, because they are slightly higher, you 'step' in the car instead of 'falling in', as is often the case with a classic car that is usually a lower argument. Since the average age of the population is headed. Used, « says Christophe Dubon of Febiac.
Robust and modern
Most models are also designed with a robust and modern look that appeals to a wide audience. They are often seen as an SUV.
However, few models have actually been designed to cope with difficult sites. Yet it is a vehicle that can handle different types of weather conditions and roads (snow, mud …), but it is mainly the idea that is attractive and cool for many drivers.
