New rules for phones and tablets sold in the EU will apply from June 20. All manufacturers that sell phones and tablets on the European Union market will have to obey the new rules. The rules include compulsory functions such as easier repairs, battery life, resistance to the housing, but also the addition of a sticker that will clearly show it.
The new rules apply to devices whose sales in Europe will begin after June 20, 2025. They refer to four types of devices: wireless landline phones – devices whose base is connected to a fixed telephone line, classic phones – not connecting to the Internet and do not have the ability to install applications, smartphones – devices that have an integration screen, diagonal between 4 and 7 inches, Keyboard and operate with an operating system similar to smartphones, such as Android and IOS. But there are some exceptions. Devices that are not covered by the new regulation are phones with flexible open -up screens, smartphones designed for high -security communications and tablets working with an operating system for computers, such as Windows.
In order to be able to sell their phones and tablets in the EU market or EEA, manufacturers must strictly adhere to the key ecosesign rules: battery durability – the battery must withstand at least 800 charging and discharge cycles while retaining at least 80 percent of the starting capacity; Device resistance – all devices must meet a certain level of resistance to falls, scratches, dust and water; Long -term software support – mandatory operating system updates at least five years after the completion of model sales; Availability of spare parts – manufacturers must provide professional spare parts for five to ten business days, and at least seven years after the model comes out of sale; Open access – Professional repairers must have impartial access to the necessary software and firmware; Energy stickers – mandatory stickers that clearly display information on energy efficiency, battery life, downside and water resistance, as well as device repair assessment.
The stickers are, known as energy marks, will come with all phones and tablets. Similar stickers can already be seen on appliances as refrigerators and washing machines.
