« Silviu Predoiu stated that he does not know if it was communism »

The Institute for Investigation of Communism Crimes and the memory of the Romanian exile (Iiccmer) transmitted that the statements held in the public space by Silviu Predoiucandidate for the presidential elections, « who said on Thursday, at Digi24, that in Romania he does not know if it was communism. »

« We emphasize that it is not for the first time that this candidate for the highest position in the state makes erroneous statements about the period of the communist regime.

Thus, during an edition of the Podcast of ‘Specitorcii’, broadcast in March 2025, Silviu Predoiu supported totally unrealistic statements about the communist regime, such as: ‘Living those times, no one was disturbed’, ‘the banks with Ceausescu were shouting in color in the big mouth’ or ‘I do not say that it was not oppressive. I do not dispute that it was not oppressive, but a lot of people later. At 20 years I saw my holidays, fun I am afraid that there were fewer those who were then dissident than they are now trying to suggest. ‘

« We recall that Romania was, for 42 years under the leadership of a communist, oppressive dictatorial regime, which destroyed tens of thousands of lives, by terror from communist political prisons, through the unimaginable conditions in the hospital homes in which over 15 thousand children have lost their lives, by the abusive violation of the human rights and by the annulment. And cold, as the candidate Silviu Predoiu states, but he involved an oppressive, barbarian and insulation system.

We also remind that in December 2006, the President of Romania explicitly and categorically condemned the communist system in Romania as an illegitimate and criminal throughout its existence. In this context, we want to emphasize the importance of correct information and a thorough understanding of the recent history of Romania, to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. This is not only to honor the memory of the victims, but it is necessary to contribute to the consolidation of a democratic society and the fundamental values of human dignity.

Regarding this situation, prof.univ.dr. Daniel Șandru, executive president of IICCMER, said: ‘It is profoundly worrying to hear such non -gone statements against the totalitarian character of the communist regime from a candidate for the position of President of Romania, as this reflects a dangerous ignorance from the historical realities of our country. Communism was a regime that caused suffering and death, and its denial is an insult brought to all those who have suffered from the hateful abuses of the communist dictatorship. Therefore, we resort to open confrontation with our past, not to minimize or deny it. ‘, It is shown in a statement of the Institute

Iiccmer also says that he assumes the responsibility to continue promoting the documented historical truth, an essential approach for the honest understanding and assumption of the recent past and for the prevention of returning to a totalitarian regime.
