Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov will have a new deputy. It is evident from the agenda of the Prosecutorial College, today the candidacy of Magdalena Lazarova, a former member of the Supreme Judicial Council during the previous term, is voted on.

The new deputy prosecutor comes a week after the resignation from the same post was submitted by Elena Karakasheva. On Tuesday – April 29, she was appointed by the Judicial College of her old position – a judge in the Supreme Court of Cassation. He did not indicate the reasons for his resignation, and none of the prosecution had commented on her withdrawal.

Now the IF Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov again has two deputies – Vanya Stefanova, elected earlier of the year, and Magdalena Lazarova.

Lazarova’s career began at the prosecutor’s office, and in the previous SJC mandate (2012 – 2019) was part of the majority formed around the Prosecutor General Tsatsarov. After the term of office, she, along with Galya Georgieva – another member of the SJC on the same majority – became a judge in the Special Court of Appeal. And after the closure of the special rule in 2022, he was a judge at the Sofia Court of Appeal. Now the SAP judge becomes Sarafov’s deputy.

The time of Stefanova in January and Lazarova now is a reason to doubt magistrates that the two deputies are reserve prosecutors, after being temporarily blocked by the amendments to the Judiciary Act, the possibility of Sarafov being elected as a position holder.
