Short supply chains – the benefits of a consumer and farmer

Children’s Nutrition – Fresh Products

« When we have the opportunity to get support for pre -school children to feed organic food, we buy basic products directly from manufacturers. So for more than five years, our children receive a variety of, fresh and most importantly quality food. At that time, there were not many farms in the area that could directly supply our institutions – Zita Ščerbetkienė, Director of Antanas Žmuidzinavičius Gymnasium in Lazdijai district, shared her experience. We buy the main products from them: the national quality product (NKP) mark, the chicken, eggs and eco -friendly turkey. «

The headteacher emphasizes that it would be good if farmers could buy fresh vegetables, potatoes, but when the institution purchases small quantities, farmers need additional resources to manage the documents needed for this activity.

Selling products directly to the consumer is very useful for farmers, as they can plan how much production he needs to grow.

An incentive for farmers

« When kindergartens started to use support for children to feed on organic food, we considered laying hens and decided to engage in this activity. Our cooperative egg quality was rated as the NCP mark. So first we started supplying eggs to educational institutions. We keep the farmer’s carcasses. It is necessary to grow.

In her view, financial support for the development of short food supply circuits will encourage more farmers to engage in this activity, especially as more and more Lithuanian residents prefer local fresh and quality products, which preserve most nutrients and tastes. Local farmers are more likely to use traditional farming methods and avoid chemical additives, making them more natural and healthier. Short food supply chains allow you to discover unique, seasonal products that may not be in large supermarkets.
