Ship accident: Luxury yacht “Bayesian” is recovered

Eight and a half months after the fall of the luxury yacht “Bayesian” in front of Sicily with seven fatalities, their rescue was started. The huge ship, which lies at a depth of around 50 meters in front of the Italian Mediterranean island, is to be brought up by mid -June. A floating crane is also used for the maneuver. It is considered extremely complicated. The costs are estimated at several million euros.

The 56-meter yacht declared as “unsinkable” was in front of the small port of Porticello in mid-August during one Storm During the night – only within a quarter of an hour. The exact circumstances are still unclear. Seven people were killed: the British software billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, two friends of couples and the ship’s cook. The “Bayesian” with a weight of 473 tons was one of the largest sailing yachts worldwide. Recordings of underwater cameras show that the lost ship on the sea floor is still quite intact on the right side. Divers had already examined it several times in the past few months. Now it should be brought back to daylight as intact as possible. A total of around 70 experts are on duty.

Already in default with schedule

The salvage should actually start on Easter, but has been postponed several times. So you are already in arrears with the schedule: the original date for a salvage until mid -May is no longer possible. The port authorities suspect that the campaign will take 20 to 25 working days. The ship is then to be brought to the port of Termini Imerese near Palermo, where the public prosecutor is also based.

The owner company, which belongs to Lynch’s widow, assumes the costs of the salvage. She was also on the ship and survived. The yacht was built by the Perini Navi shipyard, which was later taken over by the listed Sea Group. The 75 meter high mast of the “Bayesian” should remain in the water forever. The rescue work takes place about 900 meters away from the bank.

Lynch also had connections to various international secret services through another of his companies. British newspapers in particular speculate that there are two safes on board the ship, in which strictly encrypted hard drives and secret papers are located. The sea in front of Porticello remains closed throughout the rescue work. Bathing and diving is just as forbidden as flying over with drones.
