Help the Roma and Ukrainians

Magda is not the only one who, after years of public service, did not give up the struggle for better work and employed. A person in danger helps to work mainly to people from marginalized Roma communities and people from Ukraine.

« These persons are usually disadvantaged, vulnerable or long -term unemployed. Our program is based on a voluntary client’s approach, who usually turns to us for help in finding work, » explains Maroš Kušnír, coordinator for human employment program.

He continues to work with proven practices of application practice, developed their own work consulting methodology and also the methodology for developing basic skills. They send people with addictions to experts, they try to help clients with debts on how to repay them.

The cleaning house is occupied quickly

Some employers have prejudices or a bad previous personal experience against the Roma. However, a person in danger offers comprehensive continuous support not only to jobseekers but also to employers.

« We have experience in employing people in many sectors or professions, although it is true that low -skilled job offers are occupied very quickly – there is a huge interest in positions such as a cleaning, auxiliary power in the kitchen, or various auxiliary work, especially in the east of our country, » says Kušnír.

Nevertheless, according to him, thanks to good cooperation with employers who know them, they manage to occupy specific positions by their recommended clients.

With some employers, in addition to standard interviews, the organization will also agree on an excursion directly at the workplace. In this time, the employer can at least observe the behavior of clients and see if they really take it responsibly and seriously.

The entitlement to both maternity and sickness benefit

Working on permanent employment brings people in difficult life situations much more benefits than seasonal brigades – regular payment every month, wage protected by law – minimum wage, overtime bonuses, holidays, weekends, night work, but also social and health insurance. This follows the entitlement to sickness benefits, maternity, nursing or pension insurance.

Of course work for permanent employment is also a claim to the holidaynotice period, severance pay or protection against disproportionate release.

« Among other things, employees often have the opportunity to grow career, educate internally and also have a better chance of getting funding from the bank. This is not an option in activation work or seasonal brigades compared to permanent employment, » Kušnír explains.

The employer apologized for distrust

Employers also provide a person at risk of feedback on new employees. Sometimes they did not believe that clients could one day be a full -fledged part of their businesses.

« When they saw them work and then they apologized for the initial mistrust. Of course, the beginnings are difficult everywhere, about it, especially if a person comes from an environment influenced by generational poverty, where, for example, basic needs such as running water and the like are not covered, » explains the coordinator.

Experience shows that clients who go through work consulting, which sometimes lasts for months, in most cases will last longer at work and, in particular, have a lighter starting process in the workplace incorporation. « If we want to help people from the generation poverty environment find a stable job, it is necessary to give them a chance first, » adds Kušnír.

Pioneer in the employment of the Roma

Officially available data say that half of the productive age Roma is unemployed. And of which 60 percent of the Roma employed do not have long -term work, only seasonal brigades and short -time.

This vicious circle in the east of the country also breaks the Košice company KOSIT, which is engaged in waste collection and recovery. They choose colleagues regardless of skin color, sex, nationality or religion. Especially the ability and willingness to work. This is how they have been doing this for almost 25 years.

« Everybody gets the same chance in our country. Of course, there are rules that no one can break – we have zero tolerance to alcohol in the workplace and also to unjustified absences. Sometimes, after some time, people who have not been able to get used to working time, for example, are at first attempt. He did not encounter the fact that we would reject a person because he is a Roma, ”explains Marián Christenko, CEO of KOSIT, AS, AS

There is no need to have any specialization or long -term practice in some jobs. The director claims that they also have employees without permanent residence. However, this is not a condition for employment. Thanks to experience, they also have this solution. Regular income can solve the employee and the problem of housing, as it can find accommodation.

They do not rely on the state

They believe in Komit that they help themselves by helping the Roma. « I am convinced that in production and in the service, the skin color can not be qualified. Anyone who lives and does business in Košice should naturally help this community. I would not rely on the state. I should come to the state to Mašličkov and ensure everything for free lives or livelihoods? This is not the case. Educated for her children, ”says Christenko.

Estimated is 40 to 50 percent of Kosit employees of Roma origin. « Apparently this is not a small number, as in 2019, for example, we received the Roma Spirit award as the best Roma employer in Slovakia. We did not even know about it. One Roma band applied for this award, » adds director Christenko.
