She lost her limbs after routine surgery. Doctors are still working
Instead of a quick recovery – a fight for life. The woman in full strength went to the hospital for the termination of pregnancy. Two weeks later, an amputation of almost all limbs awaited her. Doctors who committed gross shortcomings heard sentences.
A treatment that turned life into a nightmare
In 2011, Priscilla Dray, then a 36-year-old woman, reported to the University Hospital for an abortion. As she reports, she was in good health, but after the procedure she began to feel strong ailments – high fever, weakness and difficulty breathing. Despite the clear symptoms of infection Doctors refused to give her antibiotics and hospitalization.
Sepsis and amputations – a dramatic diagnosis after a failed pregnancy
Just a day after consulting a duty doctor who sent her home without treatment, Dray went to another doctor who immediately recognized the threat of sepsis and sent her to the hospital. There, however, there were negligence again – The woman was left unattended, and the note passed by the doctor with the recommendation of urgent hospitalization never went to the appropriate hands.
The rapidly developing infection led to necrotizing fascitis. In a short time it was necessary to make a dramatic decision: amputation of both legs, right hand and left hand.
92 operations, new hands and kidney transplantation
Priscilla since then has undergone over 90 operationsincluding kidney transplantation and expensive transplantation of both hands in the United States. As she says, new hands are stiff and do not allow her, among others to give insulin to a child who needs constant care. Despite the progress of medicine, trauma and physical restrictions are still its everyday life.
Dray in conversation with the French media does not hide emotions:
« I couldn’t keep my child, I didn’t see him for three months. » I was taken away from everything that was most important.
At the time of surgery, her youngest child was only five months old, and older children – seven and ten years old.
A scandalous sentence for medical errors
After 14 years, the court found two doctors guilty. Dr. Martial Dekohili and dr François Vandenbossche heard sentences of six and nine months imprisonment suspended. A fine of 6,800 pounds (approx. 34 thousand PLN) was also imposed on them. They must also cover the legal costs of the victim. The hospital was not responsible.
Public opinion reaction: « This is a parody of justice »
The verdict aroused outrage. The lawyer of Priscilla described him as « rare in criminal law » and emphasized that he has no real consequences for doctors who can still practice. As he noted, this is irrelevant to the systemic safety of patients.
Sepsis – a quiet killer
According to NHS, Sepsa is one of the most dangerous complications of infection. Untreated, leads to multi -organ failure and even death. Early diagnosis and immediate treatment are important, most often antibiotics and intensive therapy. In the case of Priscilla Dray, this reaction was missing.
