SHAME! Ivano has autism and intellectual difficulties, and she has to learn what a monetary policy is

John has 16 year, the most severe degree of autism and a mild intellectual difficulty. At the Dubrava Education Center in Zagreb, he goes to the first grade of the School of Assistant Administrator, in order to one day, says his mother Suzana Rešetar, can help in a office – insert files in folders, photocopy, do the easiest office jobs. Thus, it also writes on the Center page: « The occupation of the assistant administrator is trained by students to perform the basic administrative, office and secretaries. » The Center is an institution for the provision of social services and education services to children with disabilities and adults with disabilities, under the authority of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.

John at the school, however, teaches such definitions: « Platoon pays to state administration bodies, diplomatic, consular and other representatives, legal entities with public powers … Payments are a legal or natural person who initiates the proceedings … The entrepreneur is a person who creates innovation and assumes a business venture initiative with the aim of achieving profit … »

In his knowledge checks, questions such as: « Who monitors the financial market: Hakom, Hanfa, Fina? », Or: « What is the highest risk on average: investment in cryptocurrencies, in the investment fund, state bonds? ». He learns the boy and what the primary activities in the economy are, as well as the fact that « monetary policy is controlled by the offer of money from the central bank, and consists of a policy of restricting a monetary offer, and from the policy of an expansive monetary offer. » We flew by Ivan’s notebooks, full of such content, solutions to the governing bodies, courts, and besides them, Ivanova, the children’s handwriting printed homework.

On the cover of the notebook, he wrote this: « We must not light and extinguish the light. We must not touch other people’s things. We must not tear papers. »

Definitions to him do not mean anything to him

– In order for Ivano to learn what a folder is, and what the data storage is, he must receive that folder in his hands, and insert the papers in him. Definitions do not mean anything to him except confusing him. He can learn what is shown in the photos, for example: the person who carries money, comes to the police, pays a fee and receives an ID – says Mother Susan Rešetar, showing us Ivan’s notebook in professional subjects. The greatest chaos in his head arises, he says, when more answers are offered in the test, and generally a bunch of long sentences.

– This material is difficult for children without difficulty, let alone for John. His education for life is not my whim, but the duty of institutions, says the outraged mother.

His education is not my whim!

We asked Coo Dubrava and the Ministry of Social Policy why the material is so difficult, whether it must be such, and on which professional studies were designed. The answer came from the Ministry, in accordance with the information they received from the Center, they say that the school guidelines of the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth are held at the school.

The next school year, the professional associate – educational rehabilitator, « will be involved in working with students, » who, with individual work with students and cooperation with teachers, will work to adapt to the content of teaching materials and the production of individualized curricula.  » But then they say that individualized curricula is already written, for every student with disabilities.

The mother wrote to the Agency for Vocational Education and Adult Education, whose expert supervision in Coo Dubrava showed more shortcomings, among other things that the individualized curriculum for Ivan was not clearly elaborated.
