At least four dead from the huge explosion in the port of Sahid Rajai

According to state media, at least 516 people were injured.

This important port for the trade is more than a thousand kilometers south of Tehran, near the big city of Bandar Abbas, which sees the Straits of Ormuz and according to the official IRNA news agency is the country’s largest commercial port.

More than 70% of Iran’s goods pass through this port, which borders the straits of Ormuz, where one fifth of world oil production passes.

Iranian state television said that initial reports show negligence in storing flammable materials in the area, while the Tehran Times reported that the explosion of many containers was the original cause of the explosion.

« The incident was caused by the explosion of several containers stored in the Port area of the port of Sahid Rajai, » a local rescue service official Mehrand Hassanzanteh said on state television.

He said that security officials had previously visited the incident and had issued security warnings.

After the incident, all the functions of the port were suspended as security and emergency teams worked for the safety of the area. Authorities immediately declared a state of emergency in Bandar Abbas hospitals to prepare for possible mass victims.

State television broadcast footage showing a large cloud of black tobacco rising to the sky from the port. Another video from a watch camera broadcast by the Mehr news agency shows an explosion in a shed that causes a dense cloud of tobacco and dust.

The explosion was heard about 50 kilometers, according to the Fars news agency. « The impulse wave was so powerful that most of the port buildings suffered serious damage, » the Tasnim news agency reported.

The number of workers present at the time of the explosion is not immediately known. Saturday is the first working day of the week in Iran.

The National Petroleum Distribution Company said the oil facilities were not damaged and operating normally.

Explosions of this size are rare in Iran, but the country has experienced deadly incidents in recent months. Last September, an explosion of a coal mine left behind more than 50 dead.

Iran’s first vice president Mohammad Reza Aref ordered an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and the extent of the damage, according to the ISNA news agency.
