SGP Vlissingen nominates woman as a candidate for the House of Representatives, against national policy

The SGP in Vlissingen has nominated Lilian Janse as a candidate for the list of the Reformed Party in the coming House of Representatives elections. That is what the local branch of the party has Thursday announced. With the nomination of Janse, the SGP in Vlissingen goes against the national party policy.

According to the party principles of the SGP, women are discouraged to stand for election for political functions. A proposal from the Vlissingen and Janse department to change that position – it would no longer be in line with legal and political practice – last month Rejected at a congress by SGP members. Only 53 members voted against, 299 against.

In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that the SGP women were no longer allowed to exclude from the electoral lists. Three years later, the regulations were adjusted in such a way that although women were allowed to become politically active for the party, the principle regulations remained that these women act contrary to their ‘calling’.

Preferred voting

Janse has been active for the SGP in Vlissingen since 2014. Over the years she turned out to be a popular politician in the Zeeland city. The Vlissingen branch of the party says on Thursday that Janse « can also be of value at the national level » for the SGP.

The SGP in Vlissingen says it is expected that the Central Board will « respect the lecture and Lilian Janse-van der Weele will record on the list of candidates ». Janse then hopes to be chosen with preference votes.

« I am the one who dares to say: Put me on the list for the Lower House, « Janse recently said NRC. « I know that the SGP faction in The Hague, or no, considers a good chance that a woman in the Chamber will be chosen in new elections. » Janse stated that she would have been approached by the SGP group in The Hague whether she « wanted to think about it ».

The SGP has been betting for two or three seats in the House of Representatives for decades.
