Severe ills will not stay / day without support

Since the beginning of last year, state -funded mobile palliative care for patients in seriously ill patients has available in Latvia at the closing phase of their lives. The National Health Service (NHS) news that funding for this service for those oncological, rare and other diseases who will live for more than 180 days will be interrupted from July 1, alarmed the patients themselves and their relatives. The reason for this decision is the overdue budget. It is estimated that approximately EUR 4 million will be needed this year. However, this information was withdrawn by the Saeima’s responsible commission, which means that those who have survived the predicted life time will also receive the service.

A hasty announcement

At the beginning of the Social and Labor Commission meeting, Martins Lauva, the recipient of this service, suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a severe neurological disease, as he gradually deprives the ability to move, talk, tomorrow and breathing, said that he would no longer be able to care for palliative care. Such sums of 2,800 euros needed for this service per month – he does not, so he is left without any social and health care pillow.
