Seven kilograms less bulky waste are thrown away per inhabitant
The amount of bulky waste has dropped by around 3,700 tons in Luxembourg between 2020 and 2023 – this corresponds to about seven kilograms per inhabitant. These figures were determined in the course of a regularly carried out analysis for the development and composition of the bulky waste volume from the environmental agency.
Despite this positive tendency, there is room for improvement: Around eleven percent of the collected objects – mainly furniture and toys – would have been used. In addition, 82 percent of the examined samples are made of recyclable materials such as wood, paper, plastics and electronic waste. These could easily be brought to nearby recycling centers.
Recycling rate for plastic remains globally low
What is striking is the difference between the different collection methods: at the house-to-house collection, the proportion of potentially reusable objects was 21 percent, while it was only nine percent at resource centers.
The increase in 2021 can be attributed to the strong floods in the east of the country. Photo: environmental office
As can be seen from the attached graphics, the year 2021 shows anomalies in trend that attributes the office to the strong floods. Especially in the communities of Grevenmacher, Remich and Echternach, they led a significant increase in bulky waste. Especially in Echternach there was considerable damage from the Flood – Numerous houses and cellars had to be cleared.
Here the residual waste is broken down into its individual parts and counted
Rethink the population
In order to further promote the positive development in waste management, the environmental office is reminiscent of some simple but effective measures: the purchase of used goods, the repair of used items and the purchase of quality products. Such a rethink not only relieves waste management, but also protects the environment.
If still bulky waste is incurred, the environmental office asks the population to continue to consciously pay attention to waste separation, to dispose of recyclable materials separately and not to put any sacks or boxes with mixed waste in the bulky waste.
