Maspalomas sand dunes

In the southern parts of the island there is a four square kilometer area that can almost be described as a desert. The island’s most impressive natural phenomenon. Large dunes that spread as far as the eye can reach. Here people who want to hike, run, swim or sunbathe gather. Whatever you want to find, the dunes in Maspalomas are a unique place that should not be missed.

Parts of the beach are nudist baths, something that is not always so clear. So be prepared to possibly encounter some naked soul during your visit. In the vernacular, it is talked about that the dunes are sand from the Sahara that blown here and settled. But the fact is that this is not true. Although the fact is sometimes a bit swaying, researchers believe that the sand has ended up here as a consequence of the large earthquake in Lisbon in 1755 and that the tsunami that followed created the dunes in Maspalomas.

Puerto de Mogán

From the beginning a sleepy little fishing village. Today a tourist resort that is just continuing to flourish. Many people call the village « Little Venice », given the small canals and picturesque houses that lie like small pearl bands around the water. This is where you come when it is time to unwind and take it a little quiet. But, with that said, it doesn’t mean you will be yourself. Here are plenty of like -minded people and the restaurants’ outdoor seating will soon be full. A good way to experience the place is to buy an ice cream, advantageously pistachio, and then just walk around. Some small shops attract visits and here are eateries for all tastes. Travel agencies offer charter trips to Puerto de Mogán.

Whether the whole stay is based here or not, it is well worth visiting. Every Friday a market is organized where various clothes and decorations are sold.

Poema del Mar

Solid translated means the place « poem from the sea » and it is a good way to describe this place. An aquarium that takes you into a whole new world. And of course it is true that Sebastian, the crab in « The Little Mermaid » sings – to down at the bottom, here is the top! An entirely different world opens up in this great sea poem. A variety of aquariums with fish from all corners of the world in over nine million liters of water. This is a place that suits the whole family and is most likely to be appreciated by all ages. There is also a jungle that causes the clothes to stick to the body and arrow poisoning frogs in screaming colors.

The place also boasts the world’s largest arched aquarium of 250 square meters distributed over 36 meters width and 7 meters high. Here you can spend all day without any problems.

Cenobio de Valerón

In the direction, it almost looks like the inside of a hive that is inhabited by gigantic bees. Gigantic bees that have all had their own in a large society. However, the truth is something completely different. Cenobio de Valerón has been used as a collective storage space for barley and other cereals as well as food.

Over 800 years ago, people came to the mountain Gallego. With the help of sleds, they opened about 350 cavities in the rock wall.

When it was first discovered, it was speculated that the cavity was room for girls from finer families. There they would live there until they got married. Today you know better and have found that this was not the case. But it is probably cool to see how the cavities interact with nature otherwise.

Roque Nublo

Located centrally in the middle of the island, this is a cliff that you do not want to miss. Los on comfortable walking shoes and head to the place that was previously a sacred place for the indigenous people. The cliff Nublo is about 80 meters high and is 1,813 meters above sea level. With the impressive size, it is considered one of the world’s largest natural cliffs. As with much else on the island, it is created by a volcano. The total hike is about five kilometers in varying terrain. However, rewards come at regular intervals throughout the tour as it passes ponds, vantage points and other natural memories. And when you reach the magnificent volcanic stone, it becomes real how big it actually is. A very nice trip for everyone who is ready for a cool hike.

Distilerías Arehucas

Rome is counted as the world’s most common type and although the most modern varieties originate from the Caribbean, they have a connection to the Canary Islands. Christoffer Columbus brought sugar cane plants from the islands and introduced these in the Caribbean as early as 1493. At Gran Canaria there is its own manufacturer of the popular drink. The distillery is open to the public and offers guided tours. Large barrels are stored in corridors and you will learn more about the process. The tour ends in a store that is also a single large tasting. Virtually their range is lined up and it is free to taste their favorite. In other words, an interesting and good visit. A place that suits anyone who is interested in learning more about the drink.

Las Palmas

Of course, a visit to Gran Canaria’s capital Las Palmas should be a priority during a trip to the island. Here, sandy beach and big city pulse go hand in hand. Las Canteras is the beach that runs three kilometers through the center. A beautiful promenade leads the road past a variety of shops and restaurants. It is a colorful city that can almost be described with Latin influences. In the older parts, the old spirit remains. And the capital is also the holder of a world record. Here, the world’s longest carnival celebration is played every year. Then it is a party for a full three weeks that applies.

The carnival starts in February and extends into March. Regardless of the carnival times or not, Las Palmas feels like a wonderful mix of everything you can imagine. Good food, hip bars and nice hotels together with sun and bath make the capital a highlight.
