Seplp elect Brown as the Chief Editor of Latvian Public Media / Day
Brown will be on June 1st.
The decision was made by Seplp after listening to the LSM board and Brown.
According to the Law on Public Electronic Media and their Governance, the editor -in -chief of the public media is elected for five years, while the candidate is nominated by the Board of the company.
The law stipulates that the editor -in -chief is the person responsible for the development and implementation of public media editorial policy and is responsible for the editorial decisions of the public media. The editor -in -chief of editorial decisions is independent of the Board of Public Media.
With the new LSM editor’s editor -in -chief, two previous positions will be eliminated – editor -in -chief of Latvian Television and editor -in -chief of Latvian Radio.
LSM points out that Brown has experience in the media industry – from the work of the reporter to the implementation of the content management processes in the newspaper « Diena », Latvian Television and TV3 News Services, as well as in the performance of the editor -in -chief of Latvian Radio. She was one of the founders of the magazine « IR », as well as the part of the research journalism of Latvian Radio.
LSM notes that Brown has received several awards for her work, including in 2020, he has won the Latvian Journalist Association’s Excellence Award as Editor of the Year.
Media industry organizations have also supported the promotion of Brown’s candidacy. The Latvian Association of Journalists in a letter of recommendations points out that Brown has a strong understanding of the mission and role of a public media in a democratic country, while the Baltic Media Excellence Center emphasizes Brown’s so far contribution to the development of Latvian radio content, to build content for different ages.
Brown emphasizes that the main task of the LSM in the coming years will be to do its utmost to protect democracy and freedom in Latvia. She notes that free media is one of the cornerstones of democracy, but at the moment the global context – political and media processes – is not favorable for democracy or journalism.
« Given this context, LSM is critically important to work in two directions – one is to achieve and reach out to the wide audience, especially when developing the content in the digital environment, and the other is to protect public confidence by focusing more on and talking to those groups that do not see itself in LSM content. »
Applicants were evaluated by the selection commission of eight people – Ieva Aile, Member of the Board of LSM and Service Development, Baiba Zuzena, Head of the Commission, Chairman of the Board of LSM and Ilze Ogle, LSM board member, Jan Semjonova, Director of Latvian Television Programs, Latvian Radio 1 Lasmane, Social Media Ombudsman Edmunds Azalon and Nellie Ločmele, the head of the magazine « is ».
The commission’s work was followed by representatives from the public media trade unions – Evija Unam Unāms Unārs, Member of the Board of the Latvian Radio Trade Union and Dace Kokle, Member of the Board of the Latvian Television Trade Union.
The editor -in -chief was offered at least € 6,500 before taxes. In total, eight applicants had applied for the editor -in -chief, but two were promoted to the third round of the competition.
At the beginning of April 2024, the merger of Latvian Radio and LTV was started, with both state -owned companies converging to establish LSM, which began its work on January 1, 2025.
