Send forged driver’s license by mail
Customs at the terminal at Keflavik Airport resorted to 43 forged foreign credentials sent to Iceland by mail in the years 2023 and 2024. In most cases, these are forged foreign driving licenses.
The proportion of certificates sent by speed to the country but turned out to be forged 16% in 2023 and about 19% in 2024.
The purpose of presenting forged foreign driver’s licenses is to be able to start driving immediately or people’s efforts to obtain an Icelandic driver’s license without going through driving time to get driving rights.
Eiríkur H. Sigurjónsson, police officer and certificate specialist at the police officer’s Institute of Institute of Institute in the Suðurnes region, says that there are often very good forgery, but there is a great raising in the system for forged IDs.
Driver of driving tests seized forgery
As stated on mbl.is these days, it is recognized by the District Commissioner’s office that citizens outside the EEA countries have been able to divide forged driving licenses for Icelandic driving licenses at the office. Employees there were poorly prepared to realize that there was a forged driver’s license when they were divided for Icelandic, as the law assumes after a six -month stay in Iceland.
In cases where people want to divide foreign driver’s licenses for Icelandic, people need to take a written and practical test but not to go for driving hours before.
Don’t run to analyze fakes
« It is not a race to analyze forgery. If you present IDs to the government where staff who have no experience of identifying such, there are more likelihood that people will come up with it, » says Eiríkur.
According to mbl.is sources, the case came up after an employee who oversees driving tests became that a number of people had little or no driving skills on a practical exam. It was despite presenting a foreign driver’s license.
The purpose of being able to drive immediately
The magistrate in the capital area has increased its cooperation with ID experts at the Suðurnes police after the case was discovered this spring. Thus, 18 foreign driver’s licenses from the office have been sent for analysis so far this year and two of them proved to be forged. Last year, five of the ten credentials sent for analysis were forged and by 2023 two driver’s licenses were sent for analysis that turned out to be both forged.
Eiríkur says that in the overwhelming majority of cases, the customs duty grabbed a forged driver’s license in the years 2023-2024. There is little attempt to send forgery to other credentials to the country by mailing.
« The purpose is usually to be able to drive on the street or that this is replaced by Icelandic driver’s license, » says Eiríkur.
Get about 620 requests a year
At the ID Agency located at Keflavik Airport there is a certificate of certificate that has the purpose of assisting in the analysis of identification. It is common for different agencies and office to request assistance in identifying credentials. Thus, 24 offices and agencies requested assistance in identifying credentials in 2023 and 23 2024. So far this year, thirteen agencies have requested assistance. In the years 2023 and 2024, the total requests were about 620 each year.
Overall, about 5% ID is forged which are sent for analysis.
At the South Sudanese Police Department ID Research Agency, 3 ID experts work, but in addition one more in half work in teaching and education.
