West and South Zealand municipalities top the list: Here most people dump in Danish and/or mathematics
There was a big difference in how many of the students in the individual municipalities that did not consist of both Danish and mathematics at the primary school graduation exam in 2024.
Worst of all, it went in Lolland Municipality, where 27.9 percent of students did not pass both Danish and mathematics. However, Lolland Municipality is among the seven municipalities where the proportion has improved most over the past year. The proportion has improved most on Bornholm.
The proportion is also high in a number of Zealand municipalities such as Ishøj, Halsnæs, Odsherred, Ringsted, Vordingborg and Guldborgsund, which have in common that more than 20 percent of the students did not pass.
In Jutland and Funen things went better. Even in the municipalities with the highest proportion-Randers, Hjørring, Vejen, Langeland, Nyborg, Ikast-Brande, Ringkøbing-Skjern and Jammerbugt-the proportion was lower than the average on the entire west and South Zealand.
The proportion of students who did not pass Danish and mathematics was lowest in Allerød Municipality (3.3 percent). Also in the municipalities of Gentofte and Lyngby-Taarbæk, less than 5 percent of the students did not pass Danish and mathematics.
« The analysis emphasizes that socio -economy has a great impact on how children perform in school. So when the population composition is as different as it is around the municipalities, it also breaks through in the academic performance of primary school, » says Emilie Damm Klarskov.
In 65 municipalities, the proportion of students who did not pass either Danish or mathematics increased from the school year 2022/23 to the school year 2023/24.
In 29 municipalities, the proportion fell.
The municipalities Læsø, Samsø, Fanø and Ærø are not included in the analysis of discretional considerations.
The main conclusions of the analysis
-
11.8 percent of primary school pupils in the 9th grade did not consist of both Danish and mathematics in the statutory tests in the school year 2023/24. This is an increase of approx. 1 percentage point in terms of the school year 2022/23. Not since 2012 the proportion has been so high.
-
The proportion has risen across all social classes, but mostly among students who have grown up in the working class or class outside the labor market. 15.3 percent of primary school students from the working class did not consist of both Danish and mathematics, and among primary school students from families far from the labor market, it applied 25.2 percent.
-
The proportion is highest in Lolland Municipality, where 27.9 percent of students did not pass the graduation test. In the municipalities of Ishøj, Halsnæs, Odsherred, Ringsted, Vordingborg and Guldborgsund, a little more than 20 percent of the students did not consist of both Danish and mathematics.
