The second day of the European Running Championship in Leuven went without major incidents. The local police reports this. Unlike the first day, in which two participants had to be resuscitated, it remained calmer today. The condition of the two people who were taken to the hospital yesterday is stable. One of them is still staying in the hospital as a precaution.

Despite the marathon that was on the program today and the larger number of participants of around 18,000 runners, the impact on the emergency services was limited. « It went pretty smoothly, » said Marc Vranckx of the Leuven police. The last participant passed the finish line around 4.30 p.m.

A limited number of runners needed medical care, mainly due to overheating or other physical discomfort. A few struggled along the way with low blood sugar levels and were helped on site with bananas and cola, among other things. At least one person was cooled in an ice bath.

Both Saturday and Sunday, no reports of thefts or other incidents were registered. According to Vranckx, this is remarkably given the estimated visitor number of 150,000 to 180,000. He explains this by the family character of the event, which results in a more pleasant atmosphere than, for example, at music festivals, where there is a lot of drinking.

Safety and medical support were today insured by a hundred employees of medical services and fire brigade, as well as 200 police officers. There were at least fifteen ambulances on the spot. In addition, dozens of volunteers were active as a steward.
