Nieuwpoort

The sea classes of two schools from Diest and Brasschaat that are taking place this week at Sport Vlaanderen in Nieuwpoort have stopped early. More and more students and supervisors became sick and suffered from abdominal run and nausea. Thursday it was decided to leave early. « Everything is still being investigated, but we don’t think it’s a food poisoning, » says Thomas Beullens of Sport Vlaanderen.

The fifth and sixth-year students from two schools from Diest and Brasschaat have been on sea classes since Monday in the Wittebrug sports center on the Brugsesteenweg in Sint-Joris near Nieuwpoort. However, that journey was stopped early on Thursday after more and more students and some supervisors became ill. In total it concerns ten people.

« When the classes arrived here on Monday, there turned out to be a student sick. He had symptoms of stomach flu, » says Thomas Beullens, operational responsible for Sport Vlaanderen in Nieuwpoort. « That student received the appropriate guidance, but still came into contact with the other students and supervisors. On Monday it stayed with that one student, but the days later, more and more students fell ill. Throughout the week, five of them already went home early. »

« There were a total of seven sick people on Wednesday evening, and another three were added on Thursday morning. Both students and supervisors were. The schools then decided that it no longer made sense to continue the sea classes. »

Stomach

« The sick all suffered from nausea, abdominal walking and fallions. We therefore suspect that it is a stomach flu and not food poisoning. In that case, many more students would have become sick, because it is a larger group. In any case, we have contacted the Care and Health Agency and the Federal Agency for the Food Chain Safety was also brought to the altitude. »

In the meantime, the research is ongoing. All students left home on Thursday by noon. (JHM)
