The Leuven public prosecutor’s office has started an investigation into arson in a scout room in Veltem. The room of Scouts Winksele-Veltem-Beisem burned out last night. Asbestos was also released, but the immediate environment is not at risk.
The emergency services received a report around 10.40 pm. The fire brigade arrived on the spot and quickly got the fire under control. The roof of the scout rooms consisted of corrugated sheets of asbestos, but that would not be a danger to the environment. The surrounding houses are at a safe distance. The scout room is completely burned down.
Arson
The Leuven public prosecutor confirms that the fire has been deliberately lit. A fire expert went on the spot with the lab on Friday morning to conduct research. From the first findings there was bad intent in the game. « It will now be further investigated who is responsible for this fire, » says the public prosecutor’s office. The Herko police investigation currently works together with the public prosecutor.
An expert is currently also investigating the impact of the asbestos released. « He will study whether and how the asbestos should be remediated, » says Mayor Luk Draye (Pact 3020). « There is no problem for the neighborhood. The environmental service of the municipality also comes to the scene and will see what needs to be done. We are far from habitation so there is no urgent risk of asbestos. »
Solidarity
The scouts must now look for an emergency solution. « There are still scout groups in Herent and the solidarity is great, » Draye continues. « A solution can certainly be found for that. We will also do everything that is possible to help them with the municipality. »(JVO)
