Schengen and Esch bring out the first municipal wine
The municipalities of Schengen and Esch/Alzette are breaking new ground in viticulture. On Tuesday afternoon, they presented a wine -produced wine, which was grown on a vineyard above the Wellenstein Moselle community. This municipal project is a novelty – so far vineyards that are managed across the municipality were not known in Luxembourg.
The wine, a Pinot Blanc, comes from an approximately 45 ark parcel, but it is not sold. As the representatives of the two communities explained in the presentation, the wine is intended exclusively for representative purposes. « I am pleased that we were able to enter into this cooperation with the municipality of Esch and now present the first municipal Pinot Blanc together, » said Michel Gloden, Mayor of Schengen (Dp).
Moselle and Alzette on the label
His counterpart Christian Weis (CSV) from Esch described the project as « extraordinary » and emphasized the similarities between Schengen and the city on the Alzette: « We are two open communities that appreciate conviviality and the European spirit. In addition, both places are strongly shaped by the nearby river. »

This connection is also visible graphically: the label, designed by the well -known Luxembourg graphic designer Michel Welflingerthe two rivers symbolically shows – the Alzette and the Moselle. The wine is called « Les Deux Rives » – an allusion to the geographical location of both partner communities.
Wine for receptions and company parties
The two communities leased the plot with the name « op eechen » at a local winegrower. The grapes were read in autumn 2024 and then processed by the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative winery. Their vice president, Serge Gales, was proud of the result at the official appointment in the vineyard: the wine is characterized by a fruity note and the typical mineral of the year. He hopes that this model of a cross -community wine project will also inspire other municipalities.

A total of around 4,000 bottles were filled, which are evenly divided into the two communities. The municipalities are planning to use the wine as a gift for citizens as well as on official occasions, receptions and operational festivals of local government.
More than just a highway between communities
The collaboration between Esch and Schengen was more of a chance, as Michel Gloden says – through personal contacts a few years ago. Today, the two regions have more than just a highway: « Many citizens from Esch visit our festivals or like to spend time on the Moselle, » says the mayor.
With united forces in the vineyard
Common projects are also planned for the future. For example, the municipalities would like to offer tours for school classes, children or interested citizens in the vineyard in order to give an insight into the work of the winemakers. According to the common desire, the cooperation should continue to grow. In the vineyard and beyond.
