Save hundreds of tons of oil annually

It was a shipping vision that took care of a preliminary draft of a new marine research vessel, but Sævar Birgisson, a shipwriter and managing director of shipping, says it is a significantly complex project to design marine research vessels than traditional trawlers.

« The trawler has the role of catching fish primarily, but marine research vessels need to serve many roles. It is not enough for the ship to be able to handle a variety of fishing gear, but it also needs to be suitable for all kinds of research projects. »

Marine research vessels need to be very quiet. The machines on board are acoustic so that they do not interfere with the measuring instruments.

It was at a ceremony in Thingvellir in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of Iceland's anniversary, that the government announced that a new marine research vessel would be constructed as a gift to the nation. The carcass saves a lot of fuel

A special committee was appointed within the MRI to formulate ideas on how the new ship should be designed and what equipment it would be. « Before the auction we made rough design on the ship and in the process it was decided that it would be better to build longer, lower and narrower ships rather than shorter, higher and wider. The new ship disproves that a screw ring on marine research vessels cannot be had.

Sævar also mentions a changed emphasis on how the various spaces of the new ship are designed.

« One of the most distinct changes to the research facility is that instead of having separate laboratories for the various on -board projects, the research centers will be merged into one general laboratory, with special space for echo measurements and special space for deep -sea research and for the equipment used for the Similar investigators. « 

Disproned myth around the screw ring

One of the challenges that Sævar and his associates at the shipping sample had to solve was to install a screwdriver on the ship without exceeding predetermined sound pollution limits, but Sævar says marine research vessels usually without a screwdriver to reduce noise.
