Save hundreds of tons of oil annually
Thanks to good design and clever solutions is Þórunn Þórðardóttir HF-300, a new ship of the MR a special sheet of the new ship which followed Morgunbladid on March 8.
It was a shipping vision that took care of a preliminary draft of a new marine research vessel, but Sævar Birgisson, a shipwriter and managing director of shipping, says it is a significantly complex project to design marine research vessels than traditional trawlers.
« The trawler has the role of catching fish primarily, but marine research vessels need to serve many roles. It is not enough for the ship to be able to handle a variety of fishing gear, but it also needs to be suitable for all kinds of research projects. »
Here you can see the shape of the ship well, but it turned out to be the most suitable carcass long and thin.

Marine research vessels need to be very quiet. The machines on board are acoustic so that they do not interfere with the measuring instruments.
It was at a ceremony in Thingvellir in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of Iceland's anniversary, that the government announced that a new marine research vessel would be constructed as a gift to the nation. The Marine Research Institute The ship Árni Friðriksson hf 200, which was delivered around the turn of the last century, and Bjarni Sæmundsson hf 30, which was more than half a century old and has now been sold to the Norwegian buyer.
Sævar says that the role of the shipping vision was first and foremost to tailor a costume around the wishes of the MRI's employees and the ship's construction committee.
« In part, we were able to take advantage of ideas and implementations from comparable marine research vessels and adapted to the wishes of Hafro, but the Marine Research Institute of each country has its own special needs, and it is the characteristic of the Icelandic research vessels that they are used in the so -called trawler that is used for advice. « These are ships that take hundreds of torque a year and need to have very good and vigorous equipment that other marine research vessels usually do not have. »
The carcass saves a lot of fuel
A special committee was appointed within the MRI to formulate ideas on how the new ship should be designed and what equipment it would be. Then the construction committee took over the reel and it was included in the committee of that committee to manage the tender for the construction of the ship.
« Before the auction we made rough design on the ship and in the process it was decided that it would be better to build longer, lower and narrower ships rather than shorter, higher and wider. Based on the carcass that can be said to have been prevalent in the construction of most marine research vessels in recent years in the countries around us, ”says Sævar.
Sævar also mentions a changed emphasis on how the various spaces of the new ship are designed.
« One of the most distinct changes to the research facility is that instead of having separate laboratories for the various on -board projects, the research centers will be merged into one general laboratory, with special space for echo measurements and special space for deep -sea research and for the equipment used for the Similar investigators. «
Disproned myth around the screw ring
One of the challenges that Sævar and his associates at the shipping sample had to solve was to install a screwdriver on the ship without exceeding predetermined sound pollution limits, but Sævar says marine research vessels usually without a screwdriver to reduce noise.
« The screw ring is of great importance to the Icelandic marine research vessels because it increases the towing by 30%, » explains Sævar, recalling that the Icelandic vessels use the dragged fishing gear and need a great deal of towing.
« It has been accepted by shipping designers that it is not possible to have a screw ring on marine research vessels without reviewing the sound limits defined by the International Marine Research Council. The towing kick is very good but it measured 41T. «
