Satellite photos reveal the scale of the fire in the Biebrza National Park
The current data and map were included in the social media of the industry portal Remiza.pl, and confirmed the spokesman of the Chief Commander of the State Fire Service, Brig. Karol Kierzkowski. According to the website, a fire that broke out on Sunday, April 20 in the afternoon, the situation is stable, but the extinguishing will take many days.

Although the area of damage visible in the satellite picture is huge, it is not only much smaller than in 2020, when over 5,000 burned down. ha, but also smaller than estimated during the action. At that time, there was even over 450 ha covered with fire. Where does this difference come from?
The discrepancy results from various methods and purposes of measurement. Firefighters’ estimates were indicative and used to coordinate rescue operations in difficult terrain, while satellite analyzes were made after the event, with favorable conditions and with the use of high precision technology

The fire brigade emphasizes that the firefighting operation was carried out in a hard -to -reach, swampy area, which in places was completely inaccessible to vehicles or pedestrian patrols, which limited the possibility of full recognition. Data with a fire area – approx. 450 ha – were given on the basis of firefighters’ estimates, which differ from the real -burned surface.

He added that it was only after extinguishing the fire that it was possible to compare operational and satellite data. – Then it was possible to conduct thorough analyzes using satellite photos. They allowed them to precisely determine the actual surface of the burned area, which amounted to about 191 ha – emphasized Kierzkowski.
