Salacgriva demolished old bridge and all new bridge supports / days

On Wednesday, a technical tour of RB Rail AS, a technical tour, took place on the Salaca Bridge. In it, the Latvian State Roads (LVC) and the contractor NB & Bridge specialists introduced the progress and challenges of the construction work.

During the construction of the new Salaca Bridge, traffic in Salacgriva is organized along a temporary bridge, and LVC representatives inspected it on Wednesday. A state -owned folding bridge is used as a temporary bridge in Salacgriva. At the beginning of May, it has a reinforced carriageway deck, with new metal slabs on the existing deck.

As we already informed, two months ago, the LVC decided to invest in a state -owned folding temporary bridge. This is done to reduce the possibility that the deck is damaged due to it moves overloaded cargo transport with a mass exceeding 52 tons. The repairs cost € 165,000 to make them, and from May 6 to May 13, traffic was closed over the temporary bridge. After the construction of new metal slabs, the temporary bridge deck is even, so there is also a reduced noise caused by the transport that moves through it.

The parameters and solution of the temporary bridge are included in the construction project of the new bridge ordered and accepted by the municipality. As it is known, the bridge over Salacu was in Limbaži (formerly Salacgriva) municipality and had been in a very poor technical condition, with traffic there for several years in reverse order. In 2022, the municipality ordered a new bridge construction project.

In order to minimize violations of the temporary bridge over Salacu, from February 28, heavy transport with an actual mass exceeding 44 t is prohibited crossing Salaca along the temporary bridge in Salacgriva. Nevertheless, drivers still often violate road traffic rules and restrictions.

There is a weighing unit on the Tallinn highway (A1) in Vitrupe, which provides mass control of the mass of trucks. According to its data, there were 100 cases in April when the freight transport exceeded 52 tons. Of these, two -thirds moved from Riga to Salacgriva and one third in the direction of Riga.

As it is known, freight transport, which is not more than 44 tonnes, may be moving without special permission and reconciliation on roads in Latvia. Traffic monitoring, including the control of road traffic rules, is carried out by the State Police (VP). The LVC also provides VP information from weighing equipment.

The construction of a new bridge

Taking into account that the municipality was unable to carry out the rebuilding of the bridge for a long time, it was taken over by state ownership and VSIA Latvian State Roads had been entrusted with preparing documentation for attracting funding and organizing construction work.

The bridge under construction will be completely demolished and instead will build a new four span steel concrete beam bridge with new supports and steel beams. At both ends of the bridge, a pedestrian sidewalk is intended to be created. On the side of the Ainazi side, the pavement will be connected to the existing pavement structure, which is built along the Salaca River, the side of the Riga side will be located locally, and new stairs will also be built at its end. The pedestrian infrastructure will also be built on the bridge.

Construction work is carried out by PS NB & Bridge, and construction supervision is provided by AS Road Project. The construction project of the new bridge was developed by SIA Projekts 3. The construction of the new four span steel concrete beams is currently under plan. Construction work must be completed in the fall of 2025.

As a reminder, transport, which is heavier than 44 tonnes, is still closed through the temporary bridge, the bypass is through Limbaži and Aloe. Heavy cargo transportation over Salacru Salacgriva will be restored after the opening of the new bridge.
