Saga Cavallin: Lordes expanding gender raises questions
The world’s hardest right now living person requires answers: Is Lorde nonbinary?
In an interview with Rolling Stone from about a month ago, the New Zealand artist told us about a conversation she had with her new friend Chapell Roan, where the Roan asked this perhaps a little good question. « I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man », became an answer.
But Roan’s boundlessness around Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor’s gender identity is not entirely unspoken. Lorde, in the rolling of her upcoming album « Virgin », said that in the work with the album « known her gender, she expands a little neighbor », that with the project she wants to do something that reflects her « feminity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, open -hearted, masculine », and in the music video to the song « Man of the Year.
Lorde has been in all this Careful to point out that she still uses feminine pronouns and that she as a white, wealthy CIS woman does not want to draw attention from transgender people, who are particularly vulnerable in the United States right now.
But – isn’t that exactly what she does?
Ten years ago, Lorde’s album campaign had undoubtedly been accused of being appropriation. She suggests that she is on the LGBTQ spectrum, but does so from a place of greater social security than someone who cannot opt out of their sexuality or gender identity but risks being subjected to violations because of it. But the pendulum seems to have been swinging. Proofs B: Alexander Skarsgårds Cannes style.
During the Film Festival, which took place at the end of May, the oldest Skarsgård brother Scandinavian Leather Men-compatible garments such as thigh-high leather boots, an empty of Finland-t-shirt and ass-cut jeans carried. The whole thing was another example of the bad phenomenon where celebrities’ red carpet stass becomes part of the marketing for their current films. In Skarsgård’s case leather gay-rom-coming « Pillion », where he plays an MC-knot who starts a BDSM relationship with a younger man.
I remember a time (2014) where Jared Leto was hedged by the audience at a film festival after portraying a trans woman in the « Dallas Buyers Club ». That the online magazines Them and Pinknews in their reporting on Lorde and Skarsgård only cheer on two, as Lorde himself points out, extremely privileged persons’ comfortable exploration of the boundaries of the heteronorm shows that we have moved quite far in the opposite direction. Because she is absolutely right in that in a world that is becoming increasingly hostile to actually queer people, may not be the kind of risk -free games the best support action.
In his book « We have never been woke » which came last fall, sociologist Musa al-Gharbi writes about how we are now at the end of what he calls for a « Great Awoking », a difficult-to-translate concept that aims at a period where people in academia, the media and cultural industry devote themselves to the intensity.
Al-Gharbi believes that such periods arise at regular intervals as a result of experiencing a loss in status within these occupational groups. It then seems profitable to ally with groups that are seen as oppressed, to build goodwill in the competition for jobs and justify their own struggle to maintain their social position.
To lorde, Skarsgård, or The almost compulsive homoerotic insinuating straight actress Pedro Pascal is obviously not at risk of being hackled is a sign of how it has stopped being fruitful to position itself as a woke. The wind has turned so sharp to even a little tone deaf Gay plot Now embraced as a solidarity document.
It is most fun that Lorde can « expand his gender » and Skarsgård cosplay YMCA without reprisals, but can we stay so far from the identity political opinion corridor? Not a step further away, please.
