NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the political promise of NATO leaders in the future to accept Ukraine in its future, even if this position is not voiced in the final communique as a result of the summit, which will take place on June 24-25 in Hague.

He also stressed that the topic of Ukraine will most likely be mentioned in the document, although the wording may vary depending on the consensus between Member States.

« If this is not in the communique, there will be nothing wrong with that, » he added, noting that at every summit the Alliance is not obliged to repeat the decisions already made.

Rutte recalled that there is no consensus among the Member States as it was time to accept Ukraine in the Alliance.

  • At a summit in Bucharest in 2008, NATO leaders first declared that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance in the future. Since then, the issue of Ukrainian membership has remained open.
