Russia responsible for shooting of the year over Ukraine in which 289 people died
For the first time in history, the UN Air Force (ICAO) decided on a dispute between Member States and ruled that Russia is responsible for international aviation law Malaysian passenger aircraft Malaysia Airlines 2014 over East Ukraine in 2014.
The accident died 298 people, mostly citizens of the Netherlands, Australia and Malaysia. The decision expressed the satisfaction of Ukraine, Australia and the Netherlands, which have long been striving for justice. Although ICAO has no enforcement power, the decision is an important step in international efforts for Russia’s responsibility.
The aircraft was shot down by a beech rocket that was brought from Russia and fired from the area under the supervision of pro -Russian separatists, reports Reuters.

The ICAO decision is the result of a joint lawsuit of Australia and the Netherlands, whose citizens were among the victims. Both countries are satisfied with the decision and have a significant step towards justice and responsibility, so they called for Russia to accept responsibility and start negotiations on compensation.
Nevertheless, Russia continues to reject its involvement in the incident and criticizes judicial proceedings as politically motivated. In 2022, the Dutch court sentenced three persons in the absence of their role in the shooting down, but Russia rejects the extradition of convicts.
Although ICAO has no enforcement powers, it has a significant moral impact and sets global aviation standards.
The victims’ relatives have long called for recognition of responsibility and justice. Some now require Russia’s recognition to be involved in possible peace agreements, as they believe that without this cannot be achieved lasting peace.
