Until 2016, the Federal Migration Service, created in June 1992, dealt with migration matters in Russia. Nine years ago, however, it was dissolved, and its functions and powers were transferred to the Main Board of Migration, which became part of the Ministry of the Interior of Russia. Today, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnow, speaking in the Federation Council, stated that The Prosecutor’s Office has checked the work of the Ministry of the Interiorin the scope of migration control and found significant deficiencies. According to him, the General Prosecutor’s Office questioned 1500 fictitious grounds for legalizing migrants.
Experts are worried that the newly created service will be a repression tool. « There are still people who understand what migration is and that migrants are not criminals and do not travel to commit a crime, » said the demographer.
