Russia has started a spring offensive from the north, says the Ukrainian general Syrsky

Last month, for example, Moscow reacted with a long series of objections and questions on an American proposal for a ceasefire, while Kyiv already agreed with an American proposal that was much less favorable for Ukraine.

Moscow still does not agree and wants far -reaching requirements to be met that tackle the « random causes of the conflict ». Analysts mainly see an attempt to postpone real peace talks.

Although Trump recently said he was « angry » with Putin because he does not seem to participate in a combat break in Ukraine, there is no apparent that the US president actually puts pressure on Moscow. On the contrary: when Trump recently introduced his worldwide import duties, Russia was strikingly lacking on the American list, just like Moscow allies Belarus and North Korea. Ukraine is taxed, with taxes of 10 percent.

Analysts again see an indication that Trump does not intend to actually turn against Putin. He says he wants to get the ties between Washington and Moscow. For Putin there seems to be no reason to admit to Trumps ideas about peace in Ukraine.

Since Trump has returned to the White House, Russia has only further increased the number of attacks on Ukraine – and especially on civilian goals. Not only does Moscow fire larger numbers of drones and rockets on Ukraine, the Russians have also adjusted and elevated their attacks.

Relatively stable

Two weeks ago warned President VolodyMyr Zensky already for a new Russian offensive, based on a huge structure of troops on the border with Soemy and Karkiv. According to Zensky, Russian President Putin was planning to start a new offensive last year in the north of Ukraine, but that had to be postponed because Moscow was surprised by the Ukrainian invasion of the Russian region of Koersk, in August.

In May last year, Russian troops already crossed the border in the KARKIV region, but got stuck at a few tens of kilometers north of the city of Kharkiv. There, the Russians still hold Ukrainian territory in two places, including part of the city of Vovtsjansk.

The front line has been relatively stable in recent months. The Russian advance in the Donetsk region, especially around the town of Pokrovsk, has fallen in pace; Pokrovsk itself is still in Ukrainian hands. In March, according to the analysts of Deepstate, the Russians would have conquered fifty square kilometers from territory in Ukraine, the lowest monthly figure since June last year. Yet heavy fighting is still reported in many places, including from the front cities of Tsjasiv Jar and Toretsk, and more in a northerly direction, in the regions around Lyman and Koepjansk.
