Russia condemns four journalists up to 5.5 years in prison for ties with Navalny

A court in Moscow has each imposed four Russian journalists a prison sentence of 5.5 years for ‘extremism’. That writes The independent newspaper The Moscow Times Tuesday. The journalists are accused of having ties with the organization of last year in captivity killed Opposition leader Aleksej Navalny.

These are Antonina Favorskaya, Artjom Kriger, Konstantin Gabov and Sergej Karelin. According to the prosecutor, the four helped to make videos for Navaly’s YouTube cable and his ‘Fund for the fight against corruption’. In 2021, that organization was labeled as extremist by a Russian court.

The prosecutor had demanded a five -year prison sentence against all four and eleven months. Sotavision, the channel for which Favorskaya and Kriger work, denies that the two have once worked for Navalny or his organization. How the process went cannot be traced: it took place in its entirety behind closed doors.

It is not the first time that Russia has shut people who are associated with the deceased opposition leader. In January three former lawyers of Navalny condemned to prison sentences between 3.5 and 5.5 years.
