Romanian prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation against the winner in the first round of last year's cancellated presidential election in Romania, Kalin Georgescu, raising an indictment. Prosecutors format an indictment against him by finding elements of reasonable suspicion of « campaign funding, support for fascist groups and other crimes ». Because of this, Romanian police have halted Kalin Georgescu these days in traffic in the capital Bucharest, depriving him of liberty and arrested him for hearing.
The Romanian prosecutor's office has announced that it has opened criminal proceedings against Kalin Georgescu (Romanian presidential candidate who won the first round of presidential elections last year, who were annulled) for alleged crimes committed by presidential candidate Georgescu. It is also charged with « encouraging action against the constitutional order, spreading false information and false statements » about the financing of the election campaign and the discovery of property of suspicious origin. Prosecutors have also stated that he is accused of « establishing or supporting fascist, racist, xenophobic or anti -Semitic organizations, as well as public promotion of war criminals and extremist ideologies ». Hundreds of supporters gathered in front of the Prosecutor's Office, waving the Romanian flag and chanting: « Release Georgescu! » Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Chiolaku said on the X platform: « The judiciary is independent and the law must be applied regardless of the individuals. »
According to the Romanian portal « Digi24 », prosecutors, in addition to the measure of deprivation of liberty of Georgescu, have also taken measures to search the premises of his close associates, including the premises of his bodyguard Horaciu. In the indictment, according to Romanian media, prosecutors suspect a total of 27 people to act against Romania's constitutional order.
As a reminder, last year the Romanian Constitutional Court took an unprecedented step, quashing the presidential election, two days before the second round (following Georgescu's surprising lead in the first round). In this context, accusations of « Russian interference in the election » emerged in the Romanian public.

Georgescu, who denies having done something accusing the Romanian prosecution, wrote on Facebook that authorities « are trying to invent evidence to justify the theft of the election and do everything to block his new presidential candidacy. » He urged supporters to attend a protest in Bucharest on Saturday.
We also remind that the first round of Romania's repeat elections is scheduled for May 4. If no candidate receives more than 50 % of the vote, a second round will follow on May 18. It is not yet clear whether Georgescu will be able to run.
Trump's current administration has criticized Romania for cancellation of last year's presidential election, and Vice President J. Vance claims that the court's ruling was based on « weak doubts » and « huge pressure » by Romania's European neighbors.
– They have just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election. This is tricky – wrote the tech billionaire and advisor at the White House, Ilon Musk, the X.
« Brissels signal » also wrote: « concrete evidence of Russian interference in the elections has never been presented. Since then, the narrative has shifted to Mr's alleged 'inadequacy'. Georgescu to serve as president because his views do not comply with the views of the establishment, whether it is the EU, Ukraine and many other issues.  » RS
