Romanian elections: Right -hander George Simion leads convincingly
The far right candidate George Simion leads in the first round of repeated Romanian presidential elections, after fifty percent of the votes counted, while Crin Antonesca’s right -wing candidate is second.
After 50 percent of the vote is counted, Simion is ranked first with 42.3 percent, the Election Commission data showed on Sunday. Crin Antonesca’s right center candidate is second with 22.5 percent of the vote.
After publishing outlets, Simion said he would not issue Romanian confidence.
– I want to thank everyone who has decided to vote for me. It was an act of courage, trust and solidarity. I am grateful and assure them that their trust will not be betrayed – he emphasized.
The Romanians went to the polls on Sunday to vote in the presidential election, which were canceled last year on suspicion of mixing Russia into the Romanian election process.
Simion, 38, opposes Ukraine’s military assistance, is critical of the EU leadership and says that he agrees with the Maga President Donald Trump’s movement.
– This is not just an election victory, this is the victory of Romanian dignity. It is the victory of those who have not lost hope, those who continue to believe in Romania, the free, respected, sovereign state – Simion said.
His possible victory in the second round that will be held on May 18 could isolate the country, impair investments and destabilize the NATO Eastern wing, where Ukraine is fighting with three-year Russian invasion, political observers said.
In the November elections, which were canceled, the dedicated candidate Călin Georgesca received the most votes in the first round, after taking the campaign mainly on the Tictok online platform.
Immediately before the second round of voting, the Constitutional Court canceled the first round due to irregularities in the financing of the campaign.
Georgescuu is also forbidden to re -run for the President and has been under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office since February for giving false statements on financing his campaign.
Simion voted with Georgescu, who called the election « fraud » and invited people to take their country back.
