Romania is choosing president: Favorite – right-wing extremists – World

The story of how these Spring Spring Refered Presidential Elections seemed half random, half inevitable. In the first round of regular presidential elections, November 20, 2024. How could Djordjescu win?

The deeper reason was the frustration of the Romanian society due to the situation in the country. The country decades rule political cliques, which share resources, serve their clienteles, control the judiciary and other state institutions and prevent any responsible management.

There are, on the one hand, former communists, which are only called Social Democrats (PSDs) and perform as nationalist traditionalists. On the other hand, there are National Liberals (PNLs), which do not have almost anything in common with classical political and economic liberalism. The third in the group is the party of the Hungarian minority (UDMR), which became a pendant of the Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban in Romania.

Those three forces have been ruling the country in different constellations for long. After parliamentary elections in December 2024. they form a three-member coalition.

Negative role of former President Johanis

The President Klaus Johannis, who was in office since 2014, was also given a very negative role in the current development. And under Prtisko, in February 2025. As his term had already expired in December.

Who is the favorite – Djordje Simion?

Dordje Simion (38) is a favorite in the election. He is the most famous Romanian right-wing extremist. It is historian by education.

She is skeptical about the EU and NATO, opposes military aid to Ukraine. Simion also commits to buy Romanian petroleum resources from the Austrian company OMV and return borders from the period before World War II.
