« Romania authorizes forbidden pesticides in the EU »

Romania defies European legislation – while some ministries oppose, others give derogations for pesticides that kill bees and endanger public health, says the deputy Brian Cristian (USR).

The politician a Posted yesterday on the World Bee Daya text in which he claims that « if the bees disappear, life disappears as we know it. It is not a slogan, but a scientific truth ignored for too long. Romania continues to play dangerous, while other European states have understood the danger and respects the environmental legislation. The EU country that has forbidden the export of forbidden pesticides including Germany.

Why do I care about bees? Because they are responsible for pollinating 70% of the crops that feed 90% of the world’s population, according to BBC data. If the bees disappear, humanity could only survive four years. Industrial pollution and pesticides used in agriculture massively kill bee colonies. In some countries, half of the bee families were lost, and the damage could not be repaired. In Romania we can still avoid such a tragedy, if we respect the law and support beekeeping.

On the World Bees Day, it is not enough to post pictures with beehives, bees or flowers. It is time to talk openly about what is still happening behind closed doors: toxic derogations, ignored European decisions and a total lack of assumption from the Government of Romania.

Earlier this year, we sent official interpellations to the Minister of Agriculture, the Minister of the Environment, the Minister of Development and the Prime Minister of Romania. I asked for explanations about the use of forbidden pesticides, such as Cruiser 350 FS – a substance that endangers bees, biodiversity, health and credibility of Romania in the European Union. As a deputy from Maramureş, a county in which beekeeping and agriculture are part of the local identity, cannot accept compromises that destroy nature and affect people’s lives.

The response of the Ministry of Agriculture was a confirmation that it goes further on the logic of the exception: « only 120 days », « only in the affected areas ». The same repetitive justifications, while reality shows that these « temporary » derogations have become a dangerous routine. The Ministry of Health told me that he voted against these derogations, that he was not informed later and that he did not collaborate with MADR to identify alternative solutions. Basically, we have an institutional blockage and a serious break between public health and agricultural policies.

The Ministry of the Environment answered vaguely and partially, avoiding the fund of questions. From the chancellery of the Prime Minister I did not receive any assumption, only the automatic redistribution of the ministerial answers. The conclusion is sad, but clear: the interest of the Government for the protection of bees and public health is zero.

Romania continues to authorize forbidden pesticides at European level, despite the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union and without real consultations with health or average experts. It is serious and unacceptable.

We need urgent transparency, political assumption and a real transition plan to sustainable agriculture, which does not sacrifice public health and the environment for short -term earnings. I can’t and I don’t want to stand aside. I will continue these parliamentary steps until Romania ceases to be the country of toxic derogations. «
