Roman Affonso of Sant'Anna. A discreet sage

Death needs to measure life to know what I like it will leave in the mouths of others. But poets sometimes anticipate, and leave hypotheses. How are you: « The dead man is closely and eternal./ tomorrow // life continues with horns, proverbs,/ ice cream in the corners,/ splendid legs of women/ and this air alien // that death/ not only dilute slowly,/ but it is something that only happens to others. ».

It was the Brazilian writer Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna who wrote these verses, and who, last Tuesday, met with death at the age of 87, who may be able to make some advantage of the enormous knowledge of literature that, in part, was lost. The other part he left in his so many essays, in the chronicles that they also held on more general issues of Brazilian culture and politics, having collaborated in publications such as the Jornal do Brasil, State of mines, BRAZILIENSE MAIL and The globe. He published more than 60 works, and endeavored as a cultural manager, directing the National Library Foundation between 1990 and 1996 and implementing projects of modernization of the collection and encouraging reading. «As a scholar, he researched the classic matrices of two procedures that were much reflected in our production – paraphrase and parody»pointed out writer Chico Viana. «This last category, worked in some of his texts and brilliantly explored in class, led us to better understand the work of an Oswald de Andrade, a Drummond or a Mario Quintana (to name a few examples)».

He has been married since the 1970s with writer Marina Colasanti, who died in January at the age of 87, for complications related to Parkinson's disease. He had suffered from Alzheimer since 2017. Journalist Fabio Lau told a publication on social networks as, a few years ago, he was in his apartment and found him seriously depressed. «It was forbidden to step on the terrace of the coverage itself. He had lost half, half of his assets. Access vetoed by a young people from the peacock who sent a warning on the scream: 'Grandpa, this slab now is ours. We don't want anyone there. If you appear there will be bullet! ' The poetry of the writer and columnist did not combine with confrontation and resistance. Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna had become hostage, mentally and physically, in her own home ».
