Robot cannot replace this, we need several nurses in the lead
“Empowering nurses is very important to improve the quality of nursing. Throughout the world, including in Slovenia, there are more leaders or leaders who represent this profession at the national level, « emphasized Dr. José Luis Cobos Serrano, the third vice president of the General Council of Spain, also a member of the board of directors of the International Council of Nurses.
On the occasion of today’s International Nurses Day, we talked to him last week at the 15th Congress of Nursing and Midwifery of Slovenia. He stressed that nurses should be aware of their meaning and powers, including in multiprofessional teams in which doctors and pharmacists are. Sometimes he wants to appear to complement others, for example, help the patient with a doctor. « This is not true, the nurse should be aware that it helps the patient with their professional care and professionalism. »
How many nurses are missing in Europe and elsewhere in the world?
The problem of nurses lack is global. We have about four million in Europe. There are 20 million in the world, and according to some studies, they would need ten million more, I think six. In Spain, for example, we have 300,000 nurses, we would need another 100,000, about the relationship across Europe, but in individual countries, especially between north and south, differ.
However, it is not enough just finding that we need several nurses. It is necessary to analyze what the needs of the residents after nursing will be in each country. The number of chronic diseases, polymedication is increasing, and nursing, competencies and the competence of nurses, how much we need general and how much specialized. In any case, each country needs analysis and vision for the future, what kind of health system it wants and what role in it the nursing is played.
