Standing up

Doug Stanhope

« Out of the hibernation »

Scene: New Circus, Stockholm

Length: 2 hours.

« Out of the hibernation »? Isn’t it a little late to finally be out of the idea? After all, people could say that 2022. But Doug Stanhope, who formed the comedian group « The Unbursible », is not like people are the most. He extended the covid restrictions for his own part, with a couple of years, sat at home and ate cannabis cakes and wrote useless jokes that he, then, thought was great fun. But when it turned out that he was « big » in Ukraine, he got out of the chair and stuck there with comedian friend Andy Andrist – who will be picking out on the stage here tonight – and went to the front to shoot the giant canon at the Russian fortifications. With the little grunt that he preceded a missile with his mother’s ashes. « Did I kill someone? I guess so. »

No, exactly, Doug Stanhope is not the usual stand -up who has come to Stockholm to joke about his difficult childhood. This whole 58-year-old’s life seems, self-elected, having been difficult. He is full too. And dressed as a, at best, door salesmen of vacuum cleaners in 1974.

Is he fun then? In his own anarchohumoristic way, yes. His material should not be called jokes in the real sense, but in his gastage of as well as wrong Humor about idiots everywhere is an intelligent core that somehow creates some thoughtful sense.

He is disappointed with That everyone hates everything nowadays, he is the original hater who hated Donald Trump while he still « was a garage band ». Doug Stanhope’s former partner Joe Rogan also gets his slings of the ladder. And he is severely disappointed that the big (far larger than him) the stands are gym -trained hangers. And then he drinks his red wine and goes over to beer. And when someone on the first bench throws up a plunta on stage, it becomes whiskey. So that’s what it goes on.

And so Doug Stanhope stands there again. With a new beer. The audience howls, roars ambiguities, falling around in the benches in pure joy and, possibly, horror

But then Andy Andrist comes. Even more stroke, even less cohesive. He, in turn, is chatting about cannabis until someone in the audience pity, goes ahead and gives him a joint. So he goes off the stage to use its fruits. And so Doug Stanhope stands there again. With a new beer. The audience howls, roars ambiguities, falling around in the benches in pure joy and, possibly, horror. It’s chaos. Much like everyone here at the same time went « free fall » on nearby green grove. And just like after such a purification bath, you can almost take on the cataract that this performance creates.

Doug Stanhope ends the show, exactly after they declared two hours, with a screaming advice: stop being so afraid of everything, as immigration or whether any trans person competed as the « wrong » gender in any sport. Put off. Nothing really hard will happen to you during your life and then you die, disappointed.
