Review Dutch Netflix series ‘Football parents’ from and with Ilse Warringa

For those who have ever stood along the line to encourage playing children, the popular Netflix series offers Football parents One hundred percent recognisability. That is also the most important quality of the series.. The comedy is about the contrast between the ambitious fanaticism of the parents and what is at stake: a group of children who play football for pleasure.

Serial leader is Ilse Warringa, who previously made an impression with the award -winning school comedy The lice mother. And yes, Football parents Looks like that: a normal mother (Eva van Gessel) ends up in a group of unpleasantly disturbed parents, and must be stunned but having a halt of how those parents go over her and each other’s boundaries. That leads to many painful, embarrassing scenes.

Like Warringa in The lice mother herself shone as a teacher Ank, that’s how she is the center of attention as the enthusiastic hippie mother Marenka, which is introduced by the other mothers as: « hysterical mother, gums, red braids ». cringyexuberant behavior and its blindness for what others think of it, causes towering annoyance. But she is the only one who is willing to lead the team, with all the rocks that entails, so she is tolerated. The viewer can also be annoyed until he realizes that Marenka is the only character with a good character. And the only one who is able to put the importance of football in perspective.

Lice Mother equivalents

Although you effortlessly behind some roles Lice mother-S recognizes equivalents, the cast is largely different. The duo Bullbak girlfriends is now being played by Mariana Aparicio and Leonoor Koster. Bas Hoeflaak plays the driven trainer who has to take it easy after a heart attack, which is not possible. Other than in The lice mother Shows this series more dynamics in the mutual relationships – the arrogant father is also put on his number, the dominant duo must sometimes take it against Marenka, and the normal mother is a bit better for herself.

Football parents Is certainly entertaining, the recognisability is great, the actors are excellent. But otherwise it is not such a good comedy. Not witty and surprisingly enough. The series ends with a big fight. Just like in real amateur football where referees are regularly threatened and mistreated. In recent months it has been in Veldhoven, Helmond, Alphen and Lisse, among others. The football violence in the series remains without consequences. Is that to laugh? Little bitter denouement for an airy comedy.
