Review: Daniel Hardings Farewell in Berwald Hall
No one may have been surprised by the choice of dismissal: Gustav Mahler’s « Das Lied von Der Erde ». Daniel Harding is a Mahlerman all the way out into the stick. And after 18 years of leadership in the Berwald Hall, a long farewell is required – which began in April with Mahler’s huge « resurrection symphony ».
British Daniel Harding, 50 years in the fall, has been conductor since the teens and traffic pilot at Air France since Pandemin. As well as uniquely long -term chief conductor for Sweden’s Radio Symphony Orchestra. A collaboration that is mutually described in loving major, characterized by musical respect and diligence. Where, regardless of the world situation, one was able to shut up in the Berwald Hall, which Harding described in DN’s interview (21/5).
More exclusive than public servicemay seem. Certainly, Sweden’s Radio’s orchestra has been trimmed, although it was capable of Finlir also before Daniel Harding’s arrival. But in addition to Mahler, the final concert-in addition to Mahler a fresh piece of 99-year-old Betsy Jolas and Mendelssohn’s dear violin concert-did not become the artistic culmination of the career.
Tonight’s highlight was made up of American violin star Joshua Bell. Eternal youthful with his Beatles Lugg, he delivered a rare cleaning game, sparkling clearly throughout. Harding responded with a fleshy and high -romantic accompaniment, a little heavy in the gump.
« Ces Belles Années … » by Betsy Jolas is a musical birthday present for the Opera Festival in the AIX-en-Provence (recently awarded the big Birgit Nilsson Prize). Sweet years experienced by French music mother’s Grande Dame, with a charming vocal final knuckle delivered by soprano Fleur Barron.
To « Das Lied von Der » she switched a dress and voice register to Mezzo/alt and kept the excitement in the demanding, half -hour long farewell song. Harding’s Favorites Andrew Staples, often heard in the Berwald Hall, was heard pretty and evenly in the sparkling introductory song. For here Harding’s focus was entirely on the orchestra, almost demonstratively presenting the party’s all kinds of embellishments and the skill of the radio symphonics.
