Retail sales of grapes over 12 months increased by 30%

Retail sales of grapes over 12 months increased by 30%. A sharp increase in demand for these products is explained by an increase in its availability. Active import of grapes from China, Egypt and India led to a reduction in its retail price by more than 11% per year. At the same time, consumers abandon other popular goods in the fruit category, such as tangerines.

The natural sales of grapes from the beginning of May 2024 to the end of April 2025 increased by 30% by the previous 12 months, and calculated in the analytical company Nielsen. This is the most pronounced growth among five types of fruit most popular in retail. Natural sales of oranges for 12 months added only 0.9%, bananas – 1.2%, apples – 1.4%. Analysts “Check Index” of the Platform of the OFD (fiscal data operator) noted an increase in the number of grapes purchases in January -April by 9% of the year.

The AB-Center analytical agency connects the increase in demand for grapes with an increase in its availability: on May 30, its average retail price was 407 rubles. per 1 kg, 11.4% less than a year by the year. Indirectly, the absence of a selling price is confirmed by Nielsen data. In monetary terms, grape sales increased by 30.8% year by the year, which actually corresponds to dynamics in natural terms.

Grapes are reduced due to an increase in its export supplies, it follows from the data of the ABC Center.

Analysts note that its main importers to Russia are Uzbekistan, Türkiye, Egypt, India and China. Fruitnews CEO Irina Koziy notes that China is now increasing the supply of all categories of fruits to Russia, including grapes, due to solving logistics problems. A new product for the market has become the grapes of the Shain Muscat variety, the expert says.

Mrs. Cosius notes a significant increase in the supply of grapes from Egypt, which generally develops export of fruit and vegetable products to Russia. The influx of products from India could also have an effect on the market. Mrs. Cosius recalls that the rupees of Russian exporters last year accumulated on the accounts of Russian exporters, which could eventually be aimed at importing various products. An additional factor in the growth of demand for grapes, according to Madame Cosius, could be a low base: a year ago, its sales, on the contrary, were reduced due to prices and import reduction.

Now the availability of grapes is growing due to increasing prices for other fruits, state in the « Abenter ».

According to Rosstat, the average retail price of apples in Russia on May 26 amounted to 168.1 rubles. per 1 kg, increasing by 16.1% a year by the year. The category of fruits and vegetables, according to the « CHACH Index », generally shows a leading increase in consumer expenses (See “Kommersant” from May 28). Irina Koziy notes that consumers perceive fruits as a single category, switching from one to others. Apples, bananas and oranges, according to her, compete with each other: they buy more than what is cheaper. Now the expert notes the general tendency to shift demand in favor of exotic fruits by increasing their accessibility – for example, mango, avocados, and Petita.

Another growing category in retail are nectarines. Nielsen analysts recorded an increase in their natural sales by 39.2% for 12 months. In monetary terms, growth was 50.5%. The share of nectarines in the amount of cash sales of fruits and vegetables remains relatively small – 1.6%. This is comparable to the indicators of avocados and lemons. Dmitry Leonov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Rusprodsoyuz Association, says that in 2024 237.6 thousand tons of nectarines were imported into Russia, and a year by the year, the indicator grew by 24.6%.

The most noticeable drop in natural sales in the fruit category, according to Nielsen, show tangerines. Demand decreased by 11% year by the year. The AB-Center record a reduction in the supply of tangerines due to low crop in Turkey. It also contributed to the growth of products for products. Madam Cosius notes a significant reduction in supplies from Israel and a small fall from Morocco. Other countries have increased volumes, but this could not fully level the reduction, state in the “Ab-Center”. The Rusprodsoyuz speaks of a general decrease in the supply of tangerines to Russia by 6%over the past year, to 859.6 thousand tons.
