Restrict plans for US broadcaster Radio Free Europe for the temporary revised-Diepresse.com
The future of the US foreign broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) seems to be secured for the time being.
The overarching US Authority for Global Media (USAGM) said in a letter that it would withdraw the termination of the financing agreement for 2025, the broadcaster, based in Prague. RFE/RL President Stephen Capus spoke of an « encouraging sign » that the company would be able to continue.
It is still waiting for an official confirmation that the grants will flow again, it said. Previously, the US foreign broadcaster had sued the new government of the new government under US President Donald Trump in front of a US federal court in Washington. He managed to get an injunction in order to maintain transmission.
Lament has been pending so far
The broadcaster argued that the withholding of the money was illegal because they were approved by the US Congress. The congress is the parliament in the USA. The dispute deals with an outstanding grant by the end of the year of around 71 million euros. It was initially not known whether RFE/RL will now withdraw the lawsuit or to clarify the facts.
The broadcaster with a radio house in Prague exudes programs in numerous languages, including in Russian, Ukrainian and Hungarian. Russia declared RFE/RL an « undesirable organization » more than a year ago. According to its own statements, the broadcaster reaches almost 50 million people in 23 countries every week.
