Researchers warn against sugary drinks
Sugar drinks with serious consequences
Although soda, energy drinks and fruit drinks are fixed elements for many-whether for taco night, during the lunch break or as a morning boost-new research shows that they can be severely harmful to health.
A comprehensive global study, published in the recognized journal Nature Medicine, links according to Dagbladet sugary drinks directly to over 340,000 deaths in 2020. According to the researchers, the deaths are due to the deaths of type 2 diabetes and heart disease related to the intake of the sweet drinks.
In addition, in the same year, 2.2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million new cases of heart disease were recorded, which the researchers also attribute to the sugar drinks.
According to cardiologist Adedapo Iluyomade, these results give rise to an urgent need for health measures, especially in areas and among population groups where the problem is greatest.
Sugar drinks include soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweetened traditional drinks – though not 100 percent fruit juice or drinking sweetened with artificial sweeteners.
When drinking sugary drinks, the body absorbs the sugar quickly, causing both blood sugar and insulin levels to swing violently. Over time, it can lead to unhealthy fat accumulation around organs, high blood pressure, inflammatory conditions and bad cholesterol values - all risk factors for both diabetes and heart disease.
