Reporters Without Borders: « Good there the Pope! »

Pope Leo XIV held his first press conference on Monday since he was elected, about 6,000 journalists were present. There he called for release of custodial journalists who « seek and report the truth ».

« The suffering of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of nations and international community and urges us all to protect the valuable gift of freedom of speech and freedom of the press, » said Pope Leo XIV.

Reporters Without Borders Chairman Erik Larsson is pleased with the Pope’s position and believes that it is good news that he builds on the former Pope Francis values.

– Good there the Pope! is my spontaneous reaction. It was actually remarkable, very good news, he says.

Erik Larsson means That this is also important for Swedish journalist Joakim Medin, who is imprisoned in Turkey.

– Joakim Medin is imprisoned because he has, as I usually say, committed journalism. And when the highest representative of the Catholic Church’s 1.4 billion supporters gives its support for imprisoned journalists, it can obviously have a great importance, it is important that leading representatives such as the Pope, and also politicians and city managers, go out and make such markings, says Erik Larsson.
